There are many uses for recycled cardboard boxes, but who would have thought that a kitchen stool could be made of custom boxes. The general consensus of opinion would surely be that they would not be strong enough to withstand the weight of someone sitting on them. However, there are such things available on the market, and you can make your own 2’ high sturdy kitchen stool from a couple of storage boxes which humans weighing up to 200 pounds can sit on, providing a functional, economical and recycled piece of furniture for your house.
You will need a sheet of cardboard box of dimensions 30” x 40” and 3/8” thickness (section 1), a sheet of cardboard box of dimensions 23.5” x 48” of 3/8” thickness (section 2) and a sheet of corrugated cardboard box of dimensions 24” x 72” (section 3). You will also need white glue, a sharp knife, a compass and a straight edge, such as a steel ruler to use as a guide.
To make the seat of the kitchen stool made from bespoke boxes, cut section 1 into 11.5” diameter circles which are folded over each other to make a firm base to sit on. A narrow strip of cardboard box is glued around the edges so that they cannot be seen, which will make the final stool more aesthetically pleasing.
Next, cut and fold section 2 of the cardboard box. This is the part which will bear the weight and is the core of the stool. You will need a straight edge and score parallel lines in the long side so that it folds evenly into a tight cylindrical shape. Glue the outer edge in place with the white glue.
Section 3 of the stool is mainly decorative and has thin diamonds scored out of the cardboard box which will allow the centre to be pressed in when it is rolled up. This will result in an hour glass shape. Fit all of the parts together and glue the resulting cardboard boxes together. The final result will look better if you cannot see the glue.
Once the stool made out of bespoke boxes is completely glued and dried out, you will be able to sit on it. You will, however, have to sit fairly still and not tip or lean on the stool or it will wear out quickly. By making stools out of cardboard boxes, you can provide a temporary computer seat or even stools for sitting round a dining table made out of cardboard boxes. If you have recently moved into a new house, you can use stools made from cardboard boxes until your new furniture arrives. The removal boxes will make ideal seats, providing places to sit instead of having to sit on the floor. The removal boxes can be made into other furniture such as cupboards and Cardboard Storage Boxes can be stacked so that they can be used for organising and storing clothes and other items.
