Cardboard Boxes being used to make robots
Wed 14 Dec 2011

There are many uses for cardboard boxes and, due to their many shapes, sizes and gauges, they can be adapted for a multitude of applications.   Cardboard Storage Boxes can be transformed into economical toys and games for your children, used for archiving paper files and books or cut up and used as insulation.  You can encourage your children to be creative while recycling the removal boxes which were supplied by the removal company when you were moving house.  Depending on the gauge of the Cardboard boxes, they are robust enough to withstand rough handling while being versatile enough to be made into any number of practical items therefore saving money while considering the environment by recycling.

Keeping children amused can be difficult and time consuming, but if you can teach them to be creative while making toys from cardboard boxes you can not only tap into their imagination, but they can also learn about economics and the natural world if you make this part of the process of building toys instead of purchasing them.  Dragons, monsters and robots can be made from storage boxes at a minimal cost.  Robots or robot costumes can be fashioned from Cardboard boxes and decorated with tin foil to make them more authentic. Sturdy removal boxes of differing sizes can be made for the head and body of the robot.  The size of the cardboard boxes you use will depend on the size of your child. The box used for the head will need slits for the eyes, nose and mouth.  The eyes and nose can be square cut outs and the inner edges decorated with strips of tin foil after the whole box has been painted in a silvery colour to give a science fiction theme.  Cardboard boxes can be shaped to form the arms and legs of the robot, making the elbow and knee joints flexible enough so that the child can move within the costume.  The storage box used for the body of the robot will be bigger than the one making up the head, and again will depend on the size of the child.  The whole costume can be painted as required, and if you plan on making several robots out of cardboard boxes for your children and their friends to play with, they can be decorated so that the costumes are not confused and there is no ownership dispute!

Robots come in all shapes and sizes, not forgetting the famous dalek of Doctor Who fame.  Making your very own robots and daleks from cardboard boxes will not only be fun for the kids, but bring back childhood memories and may give you more ideas for building toys from storage boxes and scraps of paper and cardboard around the house.  You will spend quality time with the kids, and hopefully they will find it more rewarding to design and make their own toys from cardboard boxes than wanting to purchase the latest x-box!  It will be time well spent and an education for both you and your kids.
