Wooden Box Out, Cardboard box In

Cardboard box was then out of the picture in the field of shipment of goods. Years ago, the wooden box and the wooden crate has been regarded as the primary storage container for the shipment of goods. Storage containers then were generally constructed from logs cut from various forest areas. Cut logs would then be processed as woods which provide the primary material then for the crates and boxes used in transporting goods from place to place. The wooden box has dominated the cardboard box as a primary storage container due to its strength and capability to handle heavy weights.

Many of the shippers then used the wooden box in transporting all sorts of goods because most of the goods that they wish to transport are in huge amount and are often quite cumbersome. Even when the cardboard box was already invented, many carriers, stevedoring operators and those engaged in shipment of goods have speculated the ability of the wooden box to withstand series of loading and unloading. It was the common fear and problem of these shippers that the goods they ship may never arrive to their consignees in the same condition as when these goods were shipped if these goods were only placed in cardboard boxes.

The storage box for the goods to be shipped is an important aspect in the shipment industries.  As time passed, many shippers realised the advantages of the cardboard box over the wooden box.  These shippers saw that the wooden box have been more and more inefficient due to its cumbersome nature. In using wooden crates as storage containers, the weight of the wooden crates creates additional pounds that also call for additional freightage fee. On the other hand, the use of the cardboard box has lessened the cost of freight substantially since the box is usually lighter in weight as compared to the wooden box and the wooden crates.

Another factor that caused shipper to substitute wooden box with cardboard box is the fact that these boxes are far better in ensuring that goods are protected from outside elements.  Take for example, the shipment of fruits and vegetables, most shippers have experienced complaints from consignees of goods arriving in damaged condition. Whilst these goods are stored in the wooden boxes, these goods are not free from being eaten by rats of being infested by insects.  Cardboard box on the other hand protects the goods from being eaten up by these parasites and allows the goods to be preserved and not infested by insects.

Due to these prospects, many box makers have seen the potential of the cardboard box to substitute the use of the wooden box. These makers have from time to time improved the quality and the mechanisms of the boxes to suit the needs of the shipment industry.  Many manufacturers of boxes have devised processes to strengthen the cardboard box to increase its holding capacity like most wooden boxes and crates can offer. At present, wooden box is out and cardboard box is in.
