Creative Learning through Cardboard Boxes

The cardboard boxes have been considered as a potential source for educational materials for creative learning. The effective learning process should not be confined to the four-walls of the classroom. The learning process is a very complex process.  The learning process especially for children is not only a matter of memorisation and retention of concepts but more of the attention span.  The average person’s especially the children’s attention span is limited. One cannot contain a child inside a room all day just asking the child to memorise concepts. The cardboard boxes offer a great collection of creative learning materials for children.

The children’s ability to process information is further enhanced through the use of creative learning materials.  A number of school teachers have realised the importance of using cardboard boxes to make representation of objects, places, and others to facilitate fast mental recognition.  Sometimes, it would be boring for children to listen to the same teacher every single day of the academic year, so imagine how these kids would be interested if one day his or her teacher uses cardboard boxes to create different characters like Sponge Bob or Dexter. Certainly, kids would love to listen to these characters.

Visual learning is at times more effective when it comes to learning.  Most children are able to understand how things work when they are able to see it.  For very young learners, the use of the cardboard boxes to illustrate things help enhance their visual recognition.  Most children are interested with automotive and moving objects.  Children would love to see how a railway station would look like. At present, many companies manufactures replica of a train station or other objects and places through the use of the cardboard boxes. With these replicas, children are able to see the real world without really getting there.

Likewise, the availability of cardboard boxes has also allowed these children to explore beyond the real world. The use of these boxes in creative learning has widened the explorative and imaginative minds of these children. Cardboard boxes have created channels towards getting into the world of fantasy and imagination. For a single day, these children can dream like princes and princesses living in castles. For these few moments they able to fulfil their fantasies of being a royalty living in these royal castles made of cardboard boxes. Allowing children to explore and imagine is an important learning process.

Today, psychologists and educators have seen how simple things like cardboard boxes are able to facilitate the learning process more effectively. Many of them recognise that creative learning has been able to address the challenge of educating school children and at the same time making learning fun and productive. More and more educational institutions are improving their creative learning materials by creating more innovative materials to aid teaching through the use of the cardboard boxes. Likewise, a growing number of manufacturing companies specialising in children’s toys and materials are also in the process of developing other educational materials made of cardboard boxes for creative learning.
